Game clocks come in two styles, just like other clocks: analog and digital. Both have two clocks, counting down the time for each player. Once you make a move, you push a button on the clock. Your time stops running and your opponent's time starts going down. Analog clocks have mechanical buttons, while digital clocks use digital mechanisms.
Digital clocks can offer all sorts of extra features and different ways of counting time. For basic use, just about any chess clock is fine. Just pick one that's cheap, looks sturdy enough and is pleasant for your eyes.
Using a clock doesn't necessarily mean a quick game. The time settings can be adjusted to get a desired effect. Quick games with very low time limits are fun every now and then, but even a longer game can benefit from a chess clock. Of course, a quicker player gets some advantage, as the slower player is more likely to run out of time.
The basic way of counting time with a chess clock gives both players a certain amount of time and once you run out, you lose. Bobby Fischer came up with a more elegant way, in which both players start with a smaller amount of time and get more for each move made. For example, players might start with 30 minutes and get 1 minute per move, possibly with a maximum time limit as well (say, 45 minutes). In that case the game can be finished more quickly, yet the players won't be desperately out of time as long as they make their moves in less than a minute.
