Peter Ganine Chess Sets
Peter Ganine (1900–1974) was born in Russia and lived in Belgian Congo before immigrating to USA. Ganine lived in Los Angeles from 1932 to his death in 1974. Peter Ganine designed two extraordinarily beautiful chess sets, Gothic and Conqueror. Gothic is also sold as Superba Masterpiece Chessmen Salon Edition. Salon edition is the more common type of Gothic set. The other is Tournament edition - much rarer - which has larger pieces.
The Gothic set is his masterpiece, a collection of heads. The style is very sculptural and gothic. The set looks absolutely fantastic, though I'm not sure how good it is for actually playing chess. However, if I wanted a good-looking chess set, that's the one I'd get. If I found the right Ganine board on eBay, I would even get Payday Loans to buy it!
The Conqueror set has complete figures, taller and thinner, done in medieval style. That one is also very beautiful set, if not as striking and unique as the Gothic set.

There are usually both available in eBay, often with quite low prices, too. The sets originate from 1940's, but have been done many times in different materials ever since. Finding a cheap, complete set shouldn't be too hard.
